Legate and Ickes

Seventeen individuals will be inducted into the 2019 Nebraska Eight Man Coaches Association: Eight Man Football Hall of Fame including Billy Legate, formerly of Clearwater and Matt Ickes of Page.

From 1990 to 1993, Legate was a dominating player for legendary coach Rod Brummels. He led the Cardinals to the playoffs three times in his career, including a Class D-2 State Runner-Up finish in 1993. He was a two-time First Team All-Conference and First Team All-State selection as both a running back and linebacker. Legate finished his prep career with school records in career rushing yards (3,683), season yards (1,807) and tackles (232). He also caught a record 79-yd. touchdown reception in the 1993 state playoffs and was named the Most Valuable Defensive Player of the 1994 Eight Man All-Star game. From 1995 to 1998, Legate attended the University of Nebraska and played a part in three National Championship Cornhusker teams. As a fullback and special teams ace, he appeared in 44 games for the Huskers. Legate set the strength index record for his position, was a three-time First Team Academic All-Big 12 and was the 1998 recipient of the Admiral U.S. Grant Sharp Trophy in recognition of his unselfish dedication to the team with little or no self acclaim/recognition.

Ickes was a standout football player for the powerful Orchard teams of the mid 1990’s. From 1993 to 1996, he became one of the all-time great players in school history while also taking the Orioles to a Class D-1 State Runner-Up finish in 1995. After leading his team in rushing during his junior and senior seasons, Ickes was honored as the Class D-1 Offensive Player of the Year and was also named First Team All Conference and First Team All-State on two occasions. He set school rushing records along the way, including career yards (4,500) and touchdowns (90). He was selected to the 1997 Eight-Man All Star Game and was also chosen to play in the Nebraska Shrine Bowl that same year. Following high school, Matt walked-on the University of Nebraska at Lincoln where he played for five years and was a part of the dominant 1997 National Championship Cornhusker team.

The induction ceremony will be held Saturday, June 15 during half time of the 42nd Annual Sertoma Eight Man All-Star game.

NEMFCA is honored to welcome Legate and Ickes into the Eight Man Football Hall of Fame, Class of 2019.
