Brunswick Library

The future is uncertain for the Brunswick Public Library after a termite infestation was discovered in its building.

Village of Brunswick trustees voted Wednesday evening to attempt to remove the termites from the Brunswick Auditorium where the library is housed. Trustees also agreed to look into what it would take to condemn the building and possible grant funds if they can’t be eliminated.

The auditorium, built in 1949, holds many historic remnants, and is used for large gatherings and holiday community events.

The Brunswick Public Library is no longer open to the public inside the auditorium; however, children’s summer programs are being held in the park and community center.

Storage options are being investigated for the library’s book, and a different building is being sought to house the library. Options the trustees are considering include adding onto the firehall building or another building; however, limited resources and lack of available buildings are limiting their choices, according to trustee Chris Twibell.

Last week, there were more than 30 children involved in the summer reading program, and more children and adults use the library regularly. The library was previously open 15 hours per week.

A committee is currently planning events to help raise funds for the library.
